The Landscape Industry covers all aspects of garden and outdoor design plus construction, maintenance, products and accessories.
In New Zealand people who design supply and install landscape services in New Zealand and products are known by a variety of titles.
Examples are:
- Landscape Architects
- Landscape Designers
- Landscape Contractors
- Landscape Maintenance
- Landscape Suppliers
- Nurseries
We highly recommend consulting a Landscape Architect or Designer. They have the expertise to save money, time and get the best result for your project.
Many have formal tertiary qualifications and may belong to a professional body such as Landscape New Zealand (Landscape Industries Association of New Zealand) or NZILA (New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects).
There are also many self-taught, highly respected, experienced landscape designers, contractors and maintenance gardeners who don’t belong to either organisation.

I have had a landscaper come in and do some work for us, we have paid him for a small retaining wall both sides of drive. He has done the back garden so far
and concreted the rocks together. He bought the weed mat hasn’t laid it and charged more. He has left things half finished PLEASE can you HELP me.? Thank you Jan
Hi Jan,
Do you have anything in writing with this “landscaper”?
If you paid them it makes the situation a little difficult. Generally it is acceptable to make a deposit, progress payments and the remainder when the job is completed.

If the “landscaper” has integrity and is a professional they will discuss completing the project and any extra’s required to complete the job.
For future projects I recommend reading this information also.
